Let’s Go to the Bahamas!
We love traveling to the Bahamas! Sure, we’ve enjoyed the hustle and bustle of Atlantis and Baha Mar on Nassau—it’s fun, it’s easy—but this time, let’s head to the Out Islands.
The Out Islands are a little harder to get to, but trust me, they’re worth the effort. American Airlines flies to the larger islands, Delta has seasonal flights, and if you can get to Nassau (where most major airlines land), you can hop on Flamingo or Bahamas Air. Another great option is a small charter airline out of Ft. Lauderdale that flies to many of the Out Islands several times a day.
Travel Tip: Stay for a Sunday
If you can, plan your trip so you’re on the island for a Sunday. It’s a special day when everyone gathers, and experiencing it is a must, even if it’s your first full day there!
Welcome to Great Exuma
Once you’ve flown into Great Exuma, you’ll find there are countless rental options to fit your vibe. Whether you need a dock for a boat or want a beachfront retreat, the island has you covered.
Where to Stay
February Point: Perfect if you have a boat. The homes here often come with docks and are conveniently close to Georgetown and the grocery store.
Hooper’s Bay: Ideal for nature lovers. You can swim with sea turtles right off the beach!
Little Exuma: If stunning views are your priority, rent a house overlooking the sea park. You’ll wake up to the most breathtaking water you’ve ever seen.
Without a Boat?
If you don’t have a boat, staying near the sea park on Little Exuma is a fantastic choice. Many homes offer pools, kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear. You won’t need a car, as local drivers can take you wherever you need to go. You can even arrange excursions, like swimming with the famous pigs.
Things to Know
Power Outages: Don’t panic! Power outages are common on the Out Islands, but they’re short-lived. Just be patient—it’s all part of the charm.
Limited Luxury: These islands don’t have Amazon Prime, so if something breaks or is out of stock, it may take weeks (or months!) to replace.
Grocery Stores: Stop at the grocery store on your way from the airport. Stock up on essentials early—fresh items run out fast. If you’re staying farther out on Little Exuma, consider arranging a grocery delivery.
Sunday Funday: Chat ‘N’ Chill
Sundays on Great Exuma mean one thing: Chat ‘N’ Chill on Stocking Island.
What to Expect: A fun-filled day with fresh conch salad, stingrays, volleyball, and live entertainment.
What to Eat: Try the pig roast—it’s legendary! But arrive early, as they often sell out.
What to Drink: Bahama Mamas and rum punch are local favorites, but they pack a sugary punch! If beer’s your thing, try Sands or Kalik.
Dining Recommendations
