Wander>Home: Round Top Round Up Part 3

Welcome to Wander>Home, a series dedicated to sharing how I bring my travels around the world back into my home! Join me on a journey that goes beyond traditional “souvenirs” as I explore the infusion of textures, colors, art, and even memories that evoke the essence of each place I've visited. This series is an invitation to see souvenirs not just as tokens, and experiences not just as memories - but as elements that can seamlessly become part of the fabric of your home.

You see, I believe wandering > home, and the collision of the two has the opportunity to not only decorate your home but also narrate tales of your adventures.

In each part of this series, I’ll share key memories of my trip, along with specific sights, sounds, and ways I brought the experience back with me (i.e. incorporated it into the fabric of my home).

WANDER WITH ME…

ROUND TOP: PART 1, PART 2, FINALE

ROUND TOP: DAY 2…

On Monday, we anticipated the arrival of rain, but that didn't dampen our spirits as we had an art day planned with Jeanne. These sessions are always invigorating because Jeanne has a knack for turning art into pure joy. Our class, titled "Experiments on Paper," was nothing short of amazing! Jeanne had assembled perfect kits for us, filled with pages of vintage ephemera (paper items that were originally meant for short-term use and were not intended to be preserved) sourced from old books, ledgers, deeds, and journals.

We explored the art of creating marks on paper using only shades of white, black, and grey to manipulate value and hues. It was a profound lesson in how minimal supplies can yield stunning results. Using charcoal ink, we ventured outside to cover our papers with bold black marks, transforming them into captivating pieces of art to take home and frame, reference, or use in another piece. It was such a perfect way to break up the trip and refresh our minds to see things a little differently than before.

This day provided a perfect interlude, breaking up the trip and allowing us to rejuvenate our minds and perceive things with fresh eyes.

In case you’re wondering about those chandeliers I bought the day before, I was still figuring out the logistics of getting them home…juggling a few side conversations in the process. With only one day left, I knew I had to make some decisions and take action!

On Monday evening, we were treated to an unforgettable event. Despite a brief spell of rain earlier in the day, the sun emerged, illuminating a stunningly beautiful afternoon. Dressed for dinner in a rustic pasture, I proudly rocked my fringe denim jacket, paired with my new vintage cowboy hat and trusty boots. I was head-to-toe ready for a true Texas experience! 🤠

Our destination was Rancho Pillow, where Sheila Youngblood has curated extraordinary experiences for Round Top attendees called "Feasts in the Field."

This particular evening featured a live fire feast orchestrated by chef Karla Subero Pittol and her talented team from @chainsaw.la. Tray after tray of delectable dishes emerged, and it was ALL incredible. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the chefs thoughtfully provided us with serapes to keep warm.

FUN FACT: A serape is a traditional Mexican garment, often brightly colored and woven with intricate designs. It is a type of shawl or blanket worn over the shoulders, typically made from wool or cotton. Serapes are commonly worn for warmth and as a fashion statement, and they hold cultural significance in Mexican and Southwestern American traditions. They can be draped over the body or worn as a cloak, providing both practicality and style.

It was a magical night under a full moon, and the energy was electric. I enjoyed every minute of the experience and will remember it for a long time. I'm already contemplating the idea of staying on the property for a future next visit!
