Best Times Of The Year To Pitch Products

Best Times Of The Year To Pitch Products

Fun Fact: Magazine editors work two to five months in advance when creating their editorial calendar. What does this mean for your PR pitches? Timing is crucial. You might think the oversized sweaters you designed in Summer need to be pitched in the Fall (when your customers would most likely wear them), but you’d be wrong!

When it comes to pitching your products, you always have to be one (or two!) steps ahead of the editors you’re trying to pitch to. This means having your brand’s media kit ready to go at all times (updating it as needed), and pitching at the appropriate time. Here’s a quick guideline that I use when pitching Lucy’s Inspired jewelry:

Pick the month that your product would be best received…

An oversized sweater would be around October for the southern states.

Then go back on the calendar for four months, which would be June! This would be the ideal time to start pitching magazines and bloggers.

If you’re pitching strictly for HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDES (both in magazines and created by bloggers), I created a handy checklist for you below!

Here’s a quick checklist for optimal pitching times:

Large, National Magazines (Ex: Vogue, Traditional Home, Cosmopolitan)  –– Early Summer

Medium, Regional Magazines (Ex: Southern Living) –– Beginning of September

Smaller, Local Magazines (Ex: Your state or city’s magazine) –– Beginning of October

Bloggers Who Do Gift Guides –– Late October / Early November, but do your research and start building a relationship with them in the Summer!

Creating a relationship with editors is going to be the most important thing to work on as you are pitching your products. Don't forget a no is just a no for now! Keep reaching out, keep revamping that story and make sure you are telling the story behind the business....not just pitching what you are selling!

Bonus Tip: Make the editor’s life easier by writing the story for them! A few minor tweaks may be made on their end, but make it easy for them to copy and paste all the important facts they need about your business!
